For years, subtitles have been a quiet compromise in home theater. You either tolerated them blazing away in the black bars or, worse, lost them entirely off the edges of your scope screen. You accepted eye-strain-inducing white text cutting through dark, cinematic scenes. You looked past oversized blocks of text obscuring the very images you invested so much in to display beautifully. You made do. Not anymore.

DSO solves three long-standing subtitle problems that home theater enthusiasts have simply learned to live with—until now.
1. Subtitles Lost on Scope Screens
If you’re watching scope content on a scope screen, the black bars are off the edges of the screen entirely. Any subtitles placed there are cut off, spilling onto your wall, ceiling, or screen masking.
DSO automatically detects this and seamlessly repositions subtitles into the active image, preserving the director’s intended framing while ensuring subtitles remain perfectly visible.
2. Subtitles That Are Too Bright
Bright white subtitles in dark scenes don’t just cause eye strain. They flood your room with reflected light, reduce perceived contrast, and interfere with your display’s dynamic black system.
DSO’s Adaptive Brightness continuously adjusts subtitle brightness based on the scene’s Average Picture Level (APL). Dark scenes receive subtler subtitles, while brighter scenes retain the brightness needed for excellent readability.
The result is a room that stays dark when it should, a display that can perform at its best, and a far more enjoyable viewing experience.
3. Subtitles That Are Too Large
Oversized subtitles cover more of the picture than necessary, obscuring the image and further reducing perceived contrast.
DSO lets you reduce subtitle size in 5% increments, by up to 50%, allowing more of the image to remain visible while maintaining excellent readability.
Features That Make Subtitles Feel Like Part of the Movie
Beyond solving those core problems, DSO includes a collection of intelligent features that help subtitles blend naturally into your content.
- Adaptive Color — DSO can automatically adjust subtitle colors to better complement the scene, such as warm golden tones during candlelit scenes or cool blues during underwater sequences, ensuring subtitles integrate harmoniously with the content and feel less intrusive.
- Adaptive Brightness — Automatic APL-based brightness adjustments reduce glare and eye strain while preserving perceived contrast in darker scenes.
- Adjustable Background Transparency — The subtitle background can be adjusted from fully opaque to nearly transparent, giving you complete control over the balance between readability and preserving the underlying image.
- Size Reduction — Reduce subtitle size in 5% increments by up to 50%, allowing more of the picture to remain visible.
- Placement — For 16:9 and intermediate aspect ratio screens (e.g., 2.0), choose between auto dimming and harmonious coloring of subtitles while leaving them in the black bar, or moving the subtitles into the movie image with full DSO features applied.

HOW DSO TRANSFORMS SUBTITLES
Designed for Use with Both Scope and 16:9 Screens
DSO isn’t just for scope-screen owners. It was designed to improve the subtitle experience for every Envy owner.
Scope Screens (2.35:1 or Wider)
For scope screens, DSO activates automatically whenever subtitles extend at least partially into the off-screen black bars, which is the case for virtually all scope content.
Subtitles are intelligently repositioned into the image with no user intervention required.
16:9 Screens
On a 16:9 screen, unlike a scope screen, subtitles in the black bars remain visible. Even so, DSO still provides substantial benefits through its two placement modes.
Move Into Screen
Subtitles remain in or near the black bar area while still benefiting from Adaptive Brightness and Adaptive Color. By reducing excessive subtitle brightness during dark scenes, DSO helps minimize eye glare while preserving your projector’s perceived contrast and allowing dynamic laser dimming or dynamic black systems to perform at their best. The image itself remains completely unobstructed.
Move Into Active Image
Subtitles are moved fully into the active image, enabling the complete DSO feature set, including subtitle resizing.
How to Get DSO
Dynamic Subtitle Overlay is available now in Envy Experimental firmware version 2.1.
To install it:
- Open the Firmware Configuration Menu on your Envy.
- Change Firmware Build Type to Experimental.
- Check for updates and install version 2.1 or later.
Once your Envy is running firmware version 2.1 or later, go to Black Bars Configuration and set Subtitle Handling to Dynamic Subtitle Overlay.
The other option in this menu, Zoom Image, is Envy’s original Subtitle Management mode, which dynamically resizes the image whenever subtitles appear. These two modes are mutually exclusive.
After selecting Dynamic Subtitle Overlay, you’ll find all of DSO’s customization options in this same menu, including:
- Background Brightness – Controls the opacity of the background behind the subtitles, from 0% (fully opaque) to 90% (mostly transparent). The background cannot be disabled entirely, which is why there is no 100% setting.
- Brightness Limiter – Automatically adjusts subtitle brightness based on the scene’s Average Picture Level (APL) to reduce eye strain and help preserve perceived contrast.
- Placement – Choose whether subtitles remain in or near the black bars (Move Into Screen) or are repositioned fully into the active image (Move Into Active Image).
- Text Size – Reduce subtitle size in 5% increments by up to 50%.
- Text Color – Choose a fixed subtitle color or let DSO automatically adapt subtitle color to better complement the content.
